Tires, the rubber that hits the road. They might be one of the most important considerations for any driver, but knowing what makes a good tire is far from common knowledge. Our car service department at Ourisman Chrysler Dodge Jeep® RAM of Bowie is here with some answers.

First off, it’s a great idea to be regularly checking the treads on your tire. The treads are the grippy bits, similar to the bottom of a shoe, that touch the ground and the space in between them. Over time, rough surfaces or pot holes can wear away at the rubber and lower your treads, sort of like an eraser. An easy way to test if your treads are too worn is the quarter test. Simply place a quarter in between the treads at various spots of the tire, head-first. If the top of Washington’s head is still visible, your tire has already been worn down from 10/32 of an inch to 4/32, and we recommend replacements. If your tires don’t have any visible treads, and it looks like the whole thing is touching the pavement, replace them now! You need that space to maintain traction while turning or on wet roads.

Different tires are also better fit for different situations. You wouldn’t put off-road tires on a new 2017 Dodge Charger, for example, just as you wouldn’t put performance tires on a 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan. It does make sense, however, to outfit any vehicle with special Winter or Snow tires during the winter months, even if you only intend to drive on the road. These tires are designed to grip and release snow, and to hold up better to low temperatures.
