Back-to-school season is probably the last thing you want to hear about in the middle of summer, but it’s good to plan ahead. Many college students would love to head back to campus with a car, but think that the price tag makes that impossible. If you’re a college student interested in leasing or buying a car before next semester, Ourisman Chrysler Dodge Jeep® RAM of Bowie, serving Crofton, MD, can help you sift through the pros and cons of both.

Pros and Cons of Leasing as a College Student

Pros: College is, ostensibly, a temporary period of time. Leasing a car keeps you covered while you’re in school and leaves you with options when you’re done. If you want to try something new when your agreement is up, you are free to do so. Plus, maintenance costs are often included in the agreement, making that one less payment you have to worry about.

Cons: When your lease agreement is finally up you aren’t left with very much to show for it going forward. Lease payments don’t build toward anything. Worse than that, should you not meet an aspect of the agreement, you’re liable to face fines.

Pros and Cons of Buying as a College Student

Pros: The beauty of buying is financing, which you can learn more about in our Chrysler finance center. When you finance you are still submitting a monthly payment, but when you’re done you own the car. You also don’t need to be concerned with fines. Since you own the car, you can do, within reason, whatever you want with it.

Cons: There is an element of permanence when you buy that doesn’t exist when you lease. The car that works great for a college student may not work as well for whatever you become when you graduate.
