Bowie drivers looking for the nearest Chrysler dealership know to come to Ourisman Chrysler Dodge Jeep® RAM of Bowie. We’d like to also make sure they know how to get the most out of the gas they choose to purchase.

When you buy gas, you are always prompted to select which grade you want. In the overwhelming majority of cases, your choices will be between regular unleaded, mid-grade, and premium. Sometimes a gas station may have an additional option for a higher-grade premium, which effectively serves the same purpose or diesel which is unimportant for our purposes here.

Will premium gas make a 2018 Chrysler Pacifica run better than regular unleaded or mid-grade? Technically, but you still might not want to do it.

Regular 87-Octane
Unless otherwise specified by your cars user’s manual there is absolutely nothing wrong with using regular unleaded gas. 87 refers to the amount of Octane in the gas. Octane causes the gas to burn more slowly and improve fuel economy. While regular is the lowest it is perfectly adequate for regular engines.

Mid-Grade 89-Octane
Mid-grade has more octane and conventional wisdom would suggest that means its fuel economy is improved. While is technically true, the improvement may not be as much as one might expect, if perceptible at all without instrumentation. There are specific engines designed to run on 89-octane, and in those cases, it’s important to use it. Otherwise, you’re fine with the 87.

Premium 91-93-Octane
Certain engines are designed to use premium gas. In these cases, it can be harmful in the long run not to use it. However, if your car doesn’t call for premium gas the benefits of using it, while there, are effectively negligible.

At Ourisman Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM of Bowie, we suggest you follow the recommendations found in your owner’s manual. If not specified, you’ll almost certainly be fine with the regular. Still not sure? Stop by our dealership and let us help you decide what’s right for your vehicle!
