The engine is considered the most important part of a car. Despite this, many people don’t know how they work and what makes one different from the other. As your Jeep® dealers in MD, we here at Ourisman Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM of Bowie would like to shed some light on the subject.

Function

When it comes to engines, it’s all about output. The power in engines comes from combustion, and combustion occurs in the cylinders. The more cylinders an engine has, the higher its output will be.

Design

There are two major types of engine designs that you’ll come across. Inline engines are usually reserved for lower cylinder counts. That is why you will often see four-cylinder powertrains when researching a new car. For six or more cylinder counts, you’re more likely to see them in a V shape, hence V6, V8, and so on.

Fuel Efficiency

As you might expect, the more combustion in the engine, the faster fuel will be consumed. This means that the higher the cylinder count gets, the worse the fuel economy will be. However, technology is beginning to curb this effect, particularly with V6 engines.

Price

The enhanced performance of vehicles with V6 and V8 engines will almost universally cause them to be more expensive than an i4. This fact is also compounded by the diminished fuel economy, making four-cylinder vehicles, in most cases, much more economical.

When selecting an engine option here at Ourisman Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM of Bowie, it all comes down to what you need your vehicle for and your personal preference. Whether it be a four-cylinder or a V6, we have an array of engine options here at our Dodge dealership near Crofton, MD.
