Winter weather isn’t just uncomfortable for you, it has a huge impact on your vehicle. At Ourisman Chrysler Dodge Jeep® RAM of Bowie, near Crofton, MD, we want to make sure you can get where you want to go. When it’s particularly cold outside, even vehicles as dependable as Jeep cars can use a little help. Here are a few ways you can give it to them.

The parts of your car most affected by the cold are your battery and the oil. Cold weather can cause a battery to lose a substantial charge, so much so that it won’t be able to start your car. As for the oil, it becomes thick and sluggish in colder weather.

The best way to fix car troubles is to prevent them in the first place. In this case, that means keeping your car as reasonably warm as you can. Parking in a garage is your best bet. If you don’t have a garage, try to park next to something big and/or under something like a carport. In especially cold situations it might even be wise to set up a heater for your engine block and battery.

Despite your best efforts, if you still find yourself having trouble getting the car started, try turning off all electronics so that the battery can focus all its power on turning the engine over. If even this doesn’t work, you will probably need a jump. If you don’t have immediate access to someone to help you, a portable jump starter could be a good investment. After you’ve jumped the car be sure to leave it on for 20 minutes, or drive 5 miles to let the battery charge fully.

If these problems persist, there may be an underlying issue. Bring your car to the Chrysler service center here at Ourisman Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM of Bowie.
