If you’re buying a new electric vehicle, you may know that it still requires service and maintenance, just like a gasoline-powered car. But does a car powered by electricity require more or less Jeep® service than a more conventional model?
At Ourisman Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM of Bowie we can answer that question and tell you how to best take care of your green vehicle.
Does an Electric Vehicle Require Less Service?
In general, we would say yes. An electric vehicle does require less maintenance than a gasoline-powered model would. An internal combustion engine is a huge and complex machine, with many moving parts and components that could be susceptible to damage from friction and extreme heat. In comparison, the battery pack and electric motors used by EVs seem far simpler and require a little less work.
An electric car doesn’t need services like oil changes. You don’t need transmission fluid since the transmission in an electric car is quite different than the one found in a gasoline-powered vehicle. You also don’t have to worry about replacing oil filters or spark plugs. There are some types of services an EV needs though.
What Kind of Service Does an Electric Car Need?
An electric vehicle still requires the occasional trip to the mechanic though. EVs still need services like:
- Tire rotations
- Cabin air filter replacements
- Wiper blade replacement
- Battery maintenance
- Checks for fluid leaks
There are still major maintenance milestones to keep track of as well. We recommend that you visit a service center at least twice per year or every 7,500 miles or so.
